This historic, private club dates back to the 1890’s and is generally considered the oldest private golf club west of the Mississippi. In the early years it was enough to ride the trolley from Tacoma to the golf course and play a round with friends. After 1905 when it moved to the banks of American Lake and it became a country club as well as a golf club, its history has been marked by membership of the area’s notable businessmen and women, physicians, lawyers and military leaders. Today the club’s history is being written by members’ activities and passions. It began as a golf club that merged with a country club; today’s members enjoy this marriage on American Lake with water frontage for water skiing, a beach house, an Olympic pool, hot tub and tennis courts, besides the nationally known golf course. The remodeled club house awaits its unwritten pages of memories and photos with grandeur and a stately presence that makes it one of the premier club houses for golf and social activities.
