As far as regional parks go, Fort Steilacoom Park is the crown jewel of the South Sound. At nearly 350 acres, it is the largest park in Lakewood and provides a diverse mix of active and passive recreation. It features an expansive trail system, baseball, softball and soccer fields, a state-of-the-art playground, off-leash dog park, picnic shelters and year round restrooms. The history of the park ranges from a military base to a self-sustaining farm for Western State Hospital to its current use as a park that boasts opportunities for passive and active recreation. It also offers a lake around which visitors can run or job, prairie lands, historical barns and trails. Fort Steilacoom Park is one of the official parking areas for the 2015 U.S. Open.
